PROFESSIONAL BASEBALL & SOFTBALL GLOVE BREAK-IN

WHAT DOES A PROFESSIONAL BASEBALL GLOVE BREAK-IN INCLUDE?

A proper glove break-in is more than simply making the leather softer. Our process works the key areas of the glove to improve closure, form the pocket, and create a strong foundation while maintaining the structure and shape of your glove.

GLOVE INSPECTION

We inspect the glove, leather, construction, and intended position to determine the best approach for breaking it in.

LEATHER PREPARATION

The glove is carefully prepared so the leather can be worked without unnecessarily over-softening or damaging the glove.

PROFESSIONAL GLOVE BREAK-IN

Using specialized glove equipment and hand-working techniques, we gradually work the leather and key hinge points to improve flexibility, closure, and overall feel.

POCKET FORMING & FINAL SHAPING

The pocket and hinge points are worked and shaped based on the glove style and position. We check closure and overall shape while maintaining the structure your glove needs on the field.

COMPLIMENTARY CONDITIONING

Once the break-in process is complete, we condition the entire glove — inside and out — to replenish moisture and help protect and preserve the leather.

BROKEN IN — NOT BROKEN DOWN

A properly broken-in glove should close naturally and form a well-formed pocket without becoming soft, floppy, or losing its structure.

Our break-in process focuses on working the areas of the glove that need to move while preserving the shape and support that make the glove perform the way it was designed.

BETTER CLOSURE. PROPER POCKET. STRUCTURE PRESERVED.

EVERY GLOVE BREAKS IN DIFFERENTLY

The right break-in depends on the glove, position, leather, and how the player wants the glove to close. A middle infielder may want a different pocket and feel than an outfielder, catcher, or first baseman. We work with each player to understand how they want their glove to feel, close, and perform.

POSITION & GLOVE STYLE

Fielding position and glove design help determine how the pocket, hinges, and closure should be formed.

POCKET & CLOSURE

We work toward a natural closure and properly formed pocket without unnecessarily flattening or over-softening the glove.

PLAYER PREFERENCE

Break-in provides the foundation. The player continues forming the glove to their hand, playing style, and preferred feel.

MORE THAN JUST SOFTENING A GLOVE

A professional glove break-in isn’t about simply making a new glove softer. The goal is to work the right areas of the glove while developing the pocket, hinge points, and closure without unnecessarily breaking down the structure of the glove.

Hughes Glove Works uses specialized break-in equipment, glove mallets, pocket-forming tools, and hands-on techniques to gradually work each glove based on its construction, position, and the player’s preferred break-in level.
